Luanna Alzuguir Marton Moraes is one of the most dominant female competitors in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Now fighting on Alliance BJJ Academy, she fights in the Medium Heavy weight range, and is a black belt. She is a Medium Heavy fighter, and favours the Open Guard position.

She was born 16 August 1985 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and she started training in Jiu Jitsu at only age 9, guided by Marcelo Mathias. In 1994, she competed in one of Sao Paulo’s major events, the “Paulista”, taking home a medal.

While still an orange belt, she decided she needed a strict and competitive training regime, and as such joined the Godoi/Macaco academy, where she stayed for a few years.

However, once that academy split, Moraes found it hard to train without an academy to back her, and provide consistent training partners. As such, she decided to enrol in a journalism course at university, contemplating leaving competitive jiu jitsu forever. Things took another turn for Luanna, though, as she found that being around the competitive BJJ circles in University fired her up. At one university championship, she met Marco Barbosa and his team. Barbosa invited Luanna to start training with them, and she happily obliged. She then started training and fighting more competitively.

After teaching BJJ at Anhembi Morubi’s University, and after numerous competition wins as a brown belt, she was awarded her Black Belt in December 2007. In 2008 she graduated university, but instead of completing an internship, she continued to live her life as a professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor.

After 2008’s Mundials, Luanna decided to kick her training up a notch, deciding to move to Alliance BJJ Academy, one of the foremost academies in the world of Brazilian Jiu Jirsu.

2009 was a landmark year for Luanna, with a World Championship (lightweight) win, and also being crowned the ADCC Champion, with a display of technical prowess against Inna Steffensen a highlight for her fans across the world.
