Marcus Vinicius Oliveira de Almeida 'Bucheca' is a Brazilian competitor hailing from Sao Vicente, in Santos, Sao Paulo. He is a black belt, competing for the academy “CheckMat BJJ”. He is a world champion under the Ultra Heavy weight range, as well as the absolute division. He is fondly nicknamed “Buchecha”, meaning cheek, due to his being overweight when starting training, having puffy cheeks. He is the 2013 ADCC Champion, and in both 2012 and 2013 won the title of World Champion in both his weight and the absolute division, highlighting his dominance in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Before starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in his mid teens, he played football and enjoyed surfing, and was only convinced to take up the martial art after his sister and then his father started, which would mark the beginning of Marcus’ entry into the wide world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Training under former BJJ World Champion Rodrigo Cavaca, Marcus’ intense physical abilities were harnessed, seeing him dominate lower belt divisions in multiple tournaments, with wins in, among others, the Pan American, Sao Paulo Cup and Scandinavian Open. After these displays of raw skill and true dominance, he was awarded his black belt after his win at the World Championship in 2010.

2010 marked the definitive placement of Marcus Almeida into the world of competitive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s greats, moving to the United States with his team mate Thiago Aragao and winning the World Nogi Tournament.

2012 launched him to a level greater still, with first place finishes in both his weight division and the absolute category at the Pan American Championships and the World Jiu Jitsu Championships.

His fight with Roger Gracie at the Metamoris Pro Invitational is remembered by fans as an excellent, technical, and exciting matchup, ending with a tie, in submission only rules, against a much more experienced opponent.

Marcus Almeida also enjoys a ‘rivalry’ with Rodolfo Vieira Srour, adding a lot of excitement to the sport, and providing enjoyment to the fans.
